Popcorn Style vs. Geekbot

Geekbot asks everyone the same questions in a DM and posts the answers. Popcorn Style gives everyone the same few seconds and picks who’s next. One is a form. The other is a meeting people show up for.

In a nutshell

Geekbot

Geekbot is an async standup bot for Slack and Microsoft Teams. It DMs each person a set of questions on a schedule, posts the answers to a channel, and keeps a reporting dashboard with polls and surveys on top.

Popcorn Style

Popcorn Style is a standup timer first. It runs live in the browser or inside a Zoom call, giving everyone the same few seconds and picking who goes next at random. When the team is scattered, the same standup runs async in a Slack thread with nudges and an AI summary. And there’s a picker wheel for the decisions that don’t need a meeting at all.

Standups in minutes, not hours.

  • Alex
  • Sam

This is the whole standup. Pick a format, pick a difficulty, and Popcorn Style picks who talks and for how long. Everyone gets heard the same amount, and the meeting is over before anyone checks their phone.

  • Random order and sharp timers, so everyone gets heard the same amount
  • Presets for standups, retros, intros and check-ins
  • Run it live in Zoom, in the room, or async in a Slack thread

Why teams pick Popcorn Style

Not a survey

Geekbot replaces the meeting with a questionnaire. Popcorn Style makes the meeting short enough to keep. A team of ten is done in under two minutes, and nobody dreads it.

Live and async

Run it in the room on Monday and in a Slack thread on Tuesday, with the same prompts and the same bot. Geekbot only does the second one.

Native to Zoom

Open Popcorn Style from the Apps menu in any Zoom call and everyone on the call is already on the list. The timer runs right in the meeting, and the recap is ready before you hang up.

Side by side

Popcorn Style runs the standup live or async, in Slack, in Zoom or in the browser, and spins the wheel for everything else. Here’s how that lines up against Geekbot, row by row.

In Slack

Async standups, without the DMs.

Popcorn Style posts the prompt in the channel and collects everyone’s updates in one thread, so the team can actually read each other. Anyone who hasn’t posted gets a nudge, and an AI summary wraps it up.

  • An AI summary once everyone’s in

Questions, answered

Is Popcorn Style a Geekbot alternative?
For standups, yes. Both run async standups in Slack with reminders and a schedule. Popcorn Style also runs the standup live, with a timer and a random order, in the browser or inside Zoom, and adds a picker wheel. Geekbot adds reporting, polls and surveys instead.
Can I run a live standup with Geekbot?
No. Geekbot is built for async updates by DM. Popcorn Style does both: a live standup with a timer when the team is together, and a Slack thread when it isn’t.
Does Popcorn Style work in Microsoft Teams?
Not yet. Popcorn Style runs in the browser, in Slack and in Zoom, and every feature works in all three.
How does the price compare?
Geekbot charges per active participant each month. Popcorn Style is free for teams of up to 3 and paid plans start at $19 a month for 5 people, which works out to about $3.80 each.

Your next standup could be your shortest.
