Popcorn Style vs. Donut

Donut helps people on a team get to know each other. Popcorn Style helps them get through the standup. Those aren’t competing jobs, so this page is less of a fight and more of an introduction.

In a nutshell

Donut

Donut is a culture tool for Slack and Microsoft Teams. It pairs teammates for coffee chats on a schedule, drops conversation prompts into a watercooler channel, celebrates birthdays and work anniversaries, and runs onboarding journeys. It’s about connection, not meetings.

Popcorn Style

Popcorn Style is about the meeting. It runs standups, retros, intros and check-ins with a timer and a random order, live in the browser or in Zoom, or async in a Slack thread with nudges and an AI summary. The picker wheel decides who’s on call and where to eat. The Golden Popcorn Award shows up now and then to say someone did a good job.

Meet the standup.

  • Priya
  • Marcus
  • Jo
  • Alex
  • Sam

This is what Popcorn Style adds to a team that already has Donut: a meeting with a clock. Everyone gets the same few seconds, the order is random, and a team of ten is done in under two minutes.

  • Random order and sharp timers, so everyone gets heard the same amount
  • Presets for standups, retros, intros and check-ins
  • Run it live in Zoom, in the room, or async in a Slack thread

Why teams run both

Different jobs

Donut pairs two people for coffee. Popcorn Style gives ten people a fast, fair standup. One builds the relationships, the other makes the meeting worth having.

Random, two ways

Donut’s randomness pairs people up. Popcorn Style’s decides who talks next and who’s on call this week. Both put employee experience first.

Double the kudos

Donut’s Shoutouts are for teammates thanking each other. The Golden Popcorn Award is a surprise from the bot for something said in standup. Teams that run both get both.

Side by side

Popcorn Style runs the standup live or async, in Slack, in Zoom or in the browser, and spins the wheel for everything else. Here’s how that lines up against Donut, row by row.

Questions, answered

Is Popcorn Style a Donut alternative?
Not really. Donut builds connection with coffee pairings, celebrations and onboarding. Popcorn Style runs the standup and the picker wheel. Teams usually use one for culture and the other for meetings.
Do they get in each other’s way in Slack?
No. Donut works in the channels you give it, mostly by DM and scheduled posts. Popcorn Style only posts when someone runs /meet or /spin, or when a scheduled standup or spin is due.
Does Popcorn Style do intros?
A different kind. The intros preset gives each person a timed turn to introduce themselves to the group, which is great for kickoffs and new hires. Donut’s intros pair two people for a coffee chat.
What does Popcorn Style cost next to Donut?
Donut’s paid plans are priced by how many people take part. Popcorn Style is free for teams of up to 3, and paid plans start at $19 a month for 5 people.

Keep Donut. Add a standup.
